I had an ultrasound yesterday and now feel very scared. She also said she could not detect a fetal pole or heartbeat. I know that the fetal age is only 5 and a half to 6 weeks, but should there be a fetal pole and a heartbeat. I am so afraid to miscarry. Any advice or shared experiences are appreciated. I talk to the doctor tomorrow, but it seems like an eternity. Thanks for your Reply! Your reply violates WebMD’s rules. The issue ishighlighted in red.

Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.
Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’.

Dating scans also reveal other important information such as: Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. For transvaginal ultrasound you can have an empty bladder When is it recommended?
Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period. For example if you do not know when the first day of your last period, or the likely day of conception was have had irregular periods have had an unusual cycle because you recently stopped the oral contraceptive pill, or you recently had a miscarriage, or you are breast-feeding had some implantation bleeding which can be been confused with your last period date What can be seen?

History Galton whistle, one of the first devices to produce ultrasound Acoustics , the science of sound , starts as far back as Pythagoras in the 6th century BC, who wrote on the mathematical properties of stringed instruments. Echolocation in bats was discovered by Lazzaro Spallanzani in , when he demonstrated that bats hunted and navigated by inaudible sound and not vision.
Francis Galton in invented the Galton whistle , an adjustable whistle which produced ultrasound, which he used to measure the hearing range of humans and other animals, demonstrating that many animals could hear sounds above the hearing range of humans.
At weeks gestation, your baby continues to change appearance as it grows and develops. By 8 weeks gestation, your baby can usually be seen with transabdominal ultrasound. By 8 weeks gestation, your baby can usually be seen with transabdominal ultrasound.
First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby.
Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby. Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel. The gel helps improve contact between the probe and your skin. Transvaginal ultrasound is an internal ultrasound. It involves scanning with the ultrasound probe lying in the vagina.
Transvaginal ultrasound usually produces better and clearer images of the female pelvic organs including the developing pregnancy, because the ultrasound probe lies closer to these structures.
The more accurate predictors, eg, LMP, should need no further corroboration during the course of pregnancy as long as the clinical course remains congruent with gestational length. Less accurate variables, eg, first fetal heart tones or fundal height need further confirmation in the absence of a useful menstrual history. New research is presented on uterine height correlation with gestational age, within the context of related research.
Since discrepant uterine size is the most commonly cited reason for ordering ultrasound during pregnancy, this variable was examined in terms of its correlation to gestational age in an effort to define the discrepancy so often cited. Results lead to the conclusion that there is a lack of research data justifying the practice of equating weeks of gestation and centimeters of fundal height. In fact, the data indicate a healthy range of variation and a general tendency for the uterine height to be less than weeks of gestation.
Jan 26, · Hi, in the New Year I have noticed a new issue with USPS Priority Mail using pre-printed labels. Just to get it out of the way, I know I am supposed to ship on the day of the printed label and almost always do except in rare cases where I miss the drop off or pickup and ship the next day.
Transvaginal ultrasound is performed using a special transducer which is slightly thicker than a tampon. It is covered with a disposable latex sheath and lubricating gel, then gently placed into the vagina. The probe sits in the vagina throughout the examination which usually takes between minutes. Most patients find the examination much more tolerable when compared to a cervical PAP smear. During the scan the sonographer may need to gently press on the abdomen to move bowel out of the way and bring the ovaries and other pelvic structures into view.
This also enables any point of tenderness in the pelvis to be identified. Transvaginal or transabdominal ultrasound: Is there a choice?

References “The technology of prenatal diagnosis is usually presented to us as a solution, but it brings with it problems of its own If you’ve already read it, you may want to skip ahead. All pregnant women in our technology-happy modern society face confusing choices about prenatal testing, its advantages and disadvantages, and its appropriateness for them. Large pregnant women face even more confusion, since prenatal testing can be slightly harder in this population, and the results can be more confusing.
However, since they may be at a somewhat increased risk for problems like neural tube defects, they also face greater pressure than others to have these prenatal tests, even though the tests are often difficult to interpret. It is further designed to address the special concerns that large women might have in taking these tests their fears, any special equipment or techniques that might be helpful, the controversies over interpretation of results, whether large women have a higher rate of so-called ‘false-positives’ on certain tests and why, etc.
It’s important to remember that discussing prenatal tests can be simple or incredibly complicated, depending on the degree of detail that is needed and the point under discussion. This FAQ is NOT intended to be a full explanation of all the intricacies of taking and interpreting various prenatal tests, but rather a discussion of them as they pertain to large women.

Ultrasonic Fetal Measurement Standards If we assume a fetus is growing normally, biometric measurements are determined by gestational age, and we can estimate the gestational age and thus the due date. Conditions which alter fetal growth will make the estimates less reliable. Although many embryonic and fetal structures can be measured, only a few measurements are easy and repeatable enough for widespread use.
